The crowds started showing up shortly after8 a.m. for the ’ss job fair. Parking was scarcwe and the lines long as people waitef for the doors to open at10 a.m. The big turnou t didn’t deter many job seekers but many were skeptical abouft their chances to make an impression onan “I’ve only been givin a five-or-10-second spiel because the recruiters don’t have time for said Monique Gabriel, a formef bank loan analyst who arrivesd at 8:30 a.m. The reason for the job fair’s big draw wasn’y hard to figure out. Maryland’s unemploymengt rate soared to 6.9 percent in March, a 17-year high.
And the job fair offerefd a crack at jobs at some ofthe region’s largest companies and government agencies. The employers on hand includec Defense InformationSystem Agency, the Departmenrt of Homeland Security, Social Security Administration, and Francine Trout, directod of Howard’s Office of Workforce said she expected the large crowds because the event was She was hoping there would be a good connection between the job seekers and employers. Some left happy or at leas optimistic. “I was able to get some good time withthe [Lockheeds Martin] recruiter,” said Brian Boyars, a forme employee at DAP, a Baltimore caulk manufacturer.
“That’s realluy all I can do.”
